Electrolysis is the permanent removal of hair for men and women. It was first used in 1875, so it is a well-proven method of permanent hair removal. It works on all hair types, hair color, all skin types and on all areas of the body. The electrologist inserts a small surgical steel wire (also called a filament or needle) into the hair follicle and then releases a mild electrical current for a fraction of a second. The current works to destroy the papilla at the base of the follicle. Once the hair has been treated it is removed from the follicle with a pair of forceps.
It is not possible to seal off the roots of all the hairs in one treatment. Electrolysis is a process, there will be regrowth and repeated and regular treatments are necessary. As the hairs are treated the papilla is weakened and the hairs become finer. Once the papilla or root is destroyed and closed off from its blood supply the follicle is incapable of ever producing a hair again, resulting in permanent hair removal.
There are three different techniques, using two different types of current that can be used to permanently remove the hair.
Every person’s hair growth and every body area is a little different and I take all the factors into consideration before I choose a method for treating an individual’s hair. This is done in a complimentary consultation. I first get some information from you regarding the area to be treated and what temporary methods have been used to treat the area previously, as well as any allergies, hormone issues or health issues you may have. From there I explain the process, answer any questions you may have as well as go over home care. I then do a sample treatment, which gives you an idea about how it feels and lets me know how your skin will react to treatments.
From here we can provide a professional honest assessment of your hair removal needs. We take all factors into consideration and design a treatment schedule so it suits each client individually, ensuring permanent results.
There are three different techniques, using two different types of current that can be used to permanently remove the hair.
- AC/Short-wave current also called “Thermolysis”. Alternating current produces a heat, which cauterizes the hair follicle and surrounding tissue. The filament is in the follicle for a fraction of a second and is very effective for treating straight hairs.
- DC/Galvanic current also called “Electrolysis”. Direct current causes a chemical breakdown of the salt water in your skin converting it to lye, which then destroys the follicle base. This method is a little slower as the filament needs to be in the follicle for a few seconds in order for the reaction to occur. This current is excellent for sensitive skin and curly or red hairs.
- Blended currents also called “Blend”. Blend is a mix of AC and DC. The Alternating current speeds up the Direct current. This method is slower than thermolysis but faster than galvanic and can be very effective on problem hairs.
